Technology today has made it even easier for those of us with type 1 diabetes to track our health and make smarter decisions when it comes to food, tracking medications and exercise.
These apps below are great to have downloaded onto your smart phone and are very affordable (even free in most cases!), so be sure and take advantage of the great technology that can make our lives a bit easier!
1. MyNet Diary iPhone App
This handy app offers easy and very comprehensive diabetes tracking. Track your blood glucose, exercise activity, insulin and other medications along with your calorie and food intake right in this tracker.
But one of the coolest features of this app is the new Food Check feature, which allows you to quickly check and compare foods while shopping and in restaurants. You can also register your account online to sync up your data.
Price is $9.99 – definitely worth checking out. Learn more and download here.
2. Carb Counting with Lenny
This simple app is great for kids – especially if they have just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This app is helpful for counting carbs. Sometimes it’s hard to know which foods have carbs and which don’t (some foods are downright deceiving!).
Carb Counting with Larry takes the mystery out of carb counting, giving kids – and their parents – more control and confidence in managing their diabetes.
This app is free – so try it out! You can learn more and download here.
This is a great app that most people don’t even realize exists – and it’s free! Moves works as a pedometer and tracks your steps throughout the day.
And just like a food journal can make you more aware of what you’re eating – a pedometer app like Moves will help you become more aware of just how much exercise you’re getting. Once you start using this, you may find yourself parking further away from the store entrance just so you can see those steps add up!

4. MediSafe Project
With our lives so hectic these days, this app will come in very handy – and could even safe a life.
It’s a very cool thing to have on your iPhone – especially if you have kids with iPhones as well. The MediSafe app sends alerts when it’s time to take medication. If the alert is not told that the medicine has been taken – it will alert a family member’s phone (like Mom’s) who can then make sure the medicine is taken.
It’s like a security blanket. And let’s face it – we’ve all forgotten to take medication right? This can help keep you on track and eliminate the worry about whether you remembered your medication.
This handy diabetic-friendly app is FREE – you can learn more and download MediSafe here.
This app is another one that helps takes the mystery of the nutritional value of the food you eat.
It can tell you if hidden sugar, trans fats, and corn syrup are lurking inside your groceries. It also provides suggestions for healthier alternatives (we could all use that, right?).
What makes this so easy to use is all you have to do is scan the barcode on the food in the grocery store and it will automatically bring up the nutritional grade. It covers just about everything in your grocery store with it’s database of over 200,000 products. Pretty impressive. You can also track your own food intake.
And the best part – it’s FREE!
